…children take home laptops
The first beneficiaries of the One Laptop Per Family (OPLF) on Thursday received their laptops which were distributed by the relevant authorities.
Head of the OLPF, Sesh Sukhdeo, said that this particular stage of the project took about six months. The authorities had to develop a plan and course of action that would most efficiently benefit the community.
He added that they were able to successfully achieve their objectives by reaching out to the community services.
Kaieteur News understands that there was a “fine tooth combing” process executed for the past six months where there was training and “one on one development” of Information Technology skills for children.
Thirty students had been chosen to test the project by writing a pre-test, completing the three-month programme and writing a post-test.
This newspaper further understands that the results of the pre-tests were discouraging with almost 100 percent failure.
It must be noted that the relevant authorities were pleased with the turn out during the three months by both parents and students who would be exposed to the laptops from Mondays to Saturdays.
The laptops have been used and owned by the families since January and were finally handed over to the families fully so that they could utilise them at home.
Minister of Labour, Manzoor Nadir, stated that this One Laptop Per Family was more than giving a technical instrument to families.
Instead it was the vehicle to take people to a destination of knowledge. All the participants needed to do now was pave the road ways ahead, he said.
He added that extreme care and diligence would need to be taken by families to ensure the long life and high performance of the instruments.
Nadir expressed his satisfaction of parents being involved with their children from the start of the training until its completion. He encouraged other parents who had not attended the event to participate along with their children more.
