A teenage boy and his girlfriend yesterday recounted how they narrowly escaped death Thursday night when a speeding car struck one of them and pinned the other in the Lamaha Street canal.
Gladwin Abrams, 18, sustained a fractured left leg after he was struck from behind by the car while walking with his girlfriend near the Lamaha and Camp Streets junction.
His friend, 19-year-old Cheriend Small, almost drowned in the Lamaha Street canal, after being pinned by the out of control car. She sustained minor injuries to her head and neck.
Both victims are hospitalised.
Kaieteur News understands that an occupant of the car was also admitted to hospital.
The vehicle, emblazoned with the words ‘Real Hustler’, had also slammed into a minibus.
Abrams and Small, who are both employed at the Qualfon call centre at Beterverwatging, East Coast Demerara, had left work just a few minutes before the accident occurred.
Abrams told Kaieteur News that he was following Small to her Albert Street home around midnight when he heard the sound of screeching tyres behind him.
“I looked back and saw this car coming towards us.”
The youth said that he had just pushed his girlfriend out of the way when the vehicle struck him. He was knocked to the ground.
“When I raise up I see my foot hanging and I start to holler for help.” Abrams said that he saw the car in the trench, but there was no sign of his friend.
He recalled that persons who were nearby pulled someone from the partly submerged vehicle, but did not immediately realise that Cheriend was also in the water.
“I asked for her and they said that they didn’t see any girl.
Fortunately, one of the passers-by heard the sound of coughing in the canal, and realised that Cheriend was trapped beneath the vehicle. They then hauled her to safety.
Abrams said that ranks in a Cops Security minibus took them to the GPHC.
Small could only recall hearing screeching tyres before being knocked unconscious.
“The people who pulled me out said that the car was on top of me,” she said. The teen lost her handbag containing her mobile phone, national identification card and other items.
According to Small, she was told that the person at the wheel was a youth who is unlicensed.
