Dear Editor,
Reference is made to the unjustified attack on the Attorney General Mr. Charles Ramson by controversial columnist Mr. Freddie Kissoon (KN Jul 8) in response to a missive from the AG about the flawed selection of Darren Sammy as Captain and a player in the West Indies team.
In several of his earlier columns, Kissoon attacked Ramson on a statement made by the AG to which Kissoon referred to in other columns and again in the aforementioned column.
It gives one the impression that Kissoon is being personal in attacking the AG – something he has a knack for in his writings on others as well, especially those against whom he feels inferior in intellect.
It is common parlance in the Guyanese colloquial tongue for people to say “I thought you are talking about me when you said so and so …” So Kissoon has held on to Ramson’s comment: “when I heard people talking about a Minister who does certain things, I thought they had me in mind …” Guyanese generally speak in that tongue-and-cheek manner.
It is kind of an ironic or sarcastic comment. They don’t really mean what they say and as such one should not hold on to the contents as bases of fact for eternity.
But that is exactly what Kissoon, the media operative, as he describes himself, the academic and self described intellect has done.
Kissoon knows exactly what Ramson meant by his off-the-cuff comment. But he wants to provoke the man, derogate his fine character, and pick a quarrel as he has done with others. Kissoon thrives on controversies and personality attacks, not on academics and intellect.
With regards to Ramson’s excellent analysis on Sammy, it is indisputable that Sammy does not belong in the West Indies team, for he has failed as a bowler, a batsman, fielder, and captain.
Virtually no one has spoken out in favour of Sammy’s inclusion in the team (in any part of the world) except Kissoon. Sammy will do the team a favour by tendering his resignation.
Kissoon is also wrong on his position that people should disrespect Minister Dr. Frank Anthony.
Regardless of the reason, one has to respect elected officials and other people of legitimate authority. Anthony is not serving an illegal regime.
I don’t know Ramson but am impressed with his writings, which come across as intellectual. Unlike Kissoon, Ramson does not attack anyone and he does not lie. Kissoon calls on Ramson to make an evaluation on who should be in the President’s cabinet. That does not fall under Ramson’s portfolio unless it is a matter related to the law.
But Kissoon does not understand these kinds of fine matters because as he himself stated, he is not a political scientist like myself, Dr. Ramharack, etc.
Just to elucidate to Kissoon, a government official may have a personal view on who is competent to hold an office but it is highly inappropriate for him to state his view publicly. Kissoon did not study politics.
So it is understandable and excusable when he makes foolish statements as in this unwarranted attack on Ramson, calling on Ramson to undertake a political task which does not fall under the purview of the AG.
