– company begins repairs
Residents of Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara, are now annoyed with the actions of well-known beverage company, the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) after one of its trucks caused major damage to their bridge while entering ‘Skull City’.
However, the company has set about effecting repairs.
According to affected residents some time last week the truck was crossing the bridge and the driver was warned that it could not “take the pressure of the truck”. However the driver continued to cross the bridge.
Within seconds some of the wooden planks began to shift and boards began to break. Kaieteur News understands that villagers initially pooled their money to build the wooden structure which provided the only access for vehicles to that section of Little Diamond.
Many families have been badly affected since their minibuses, private vehicles, taxis and even small vehicles that enter the back area to provide items to shop-owners cannot be driven across the damaged structure.
One villager is of the opinion that the truck driver visited the area to “conduct illegal business” because he made two trips with the vehicle to his home (in the same area) and while he was on his last trip, the “bridge broke”.
It was also stated that DDL representatives visited the site after villagers made their complaint.
“Dem lef dah bridge wid fine wood fuh walk pun. Still we transpee can’t get over and dem pickney dem gah watch how dem walk. Plus night time somebody can fall in,” said one man.
The residents are hoping that such incidents do not reoccur since the alternative route into the area is via a dam which is in a deplorable state.
