D’urban Street fish shop goes up in flames

Fire, suspected to be of electrical origin, destroyed a two-storey building at Lot 18 D’Urban Street, Wortmanville, around 20:20 hrs last night, leaving a family of four homeless and leaving millions of dollars in losses.
The lower flat housed a liquor restaurant and beer garden, while the top flat, where the fire reportedly started, was occupied by Mr. Jimmy Chow, his wife and two children.
They were not at home at the time.
Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle commended his ranks for preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby properties.
Mr. Harcourt Brown, who occupies the upper flat next to the destroyed building, said that he had just come out of the shower when he noticed “an orange light” at his eastern window.
He then saw the flames and immediately raised an alarm.
A distraught Mr. Jimmy Chow, who said that he lost ‘everything’, told reporters that he was at another premises some three corners away when someone informed him that his home was on fire.
He then hurried home where his worst fears were confirmed.
Asked how the fire might have started, Chow said that neighbours informed him that they had seen fire emanating from an electrical wire leading to his home.
According to Mr. Chow, he uses a generator to supply his home with electricity.
He stated that he paid the rates and taxes on the property.
Another D’Urban Street resident said that she was in her home when she heard a commotion at the fish shop. She assumed at first that a fight had broken out, but then realised that the building was on fire and observed persons lifting items out of the bottom flat.
Firefighters at the scene used two fire tenders to quell the flames. When one ran out of water, they attempted to use water from a nearby trench but abandoned this effort after the hose became blocked with silt.
After about an hour, they eventually got the fire under control.
