President Bharrat Jagdeo has stated that regional governments have a large enough stake in cricket to seek answers to the many problems affecting the game in the Caribbean. The President was addressing the media yesterday and made several comments on the issue, recapping on what was looked at previously and what is being attempted now by the Caricom leaders.
President Jagdeo disclosed that while being one of the early advocates of governments not being involved in the running of sports organisations, the current situation warranted their involvement. He touched on the level of investment made by governments and the people around the region, noting that they have a right to see the game being administered in a proper manner and all involved are treated fairly.
President Jagdeo noted that two key issues have been plaguing the smooth flow of things. Apart from the philosophical issue of who cricket belongs to, the commercial rights of players and the second being compensation for the players. He stated that the management and players are seen on two sides and this is not needed but rather a team effort to see the game progress.
The President stated that they can be settled by determining a percentage of gross earnings that the board makes and what should go to the players, also settle the commercial rights issues. He said that it could be done.
The President touched on the Chanderpaul issue and the Chris Gayle matter stating that it was ridiculous and atrocious how the two players were treated for various reasons. He however stated that it was the vindictiveness of the board that has Gayle out of the game to date, mentioning the batsman destructive ability.
He was asked to chair the sub-committee to look into the matter, however, President Jagdeo declined being on his way out, but accepted to become a member of the committee instead.
