The Berbice Cricket Board at a well attended press conference and presentation ceremony on Thursday last described the first half of 2011 as highly successful and progressive. Public Relations Officer of the Board and Chairman of the Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster in a detailed report of the Board’s activities for the first half of the year stated that they are well on the way to achieving all their objectives and goals for 2011.
Foster, who shared the press conference with BCB President Keith Foster, Treasurer Anil Beharry and Coaching Coordinator Julian Moore informed that the Board was able to complete several cricket tournaments despite the challenges posed by rain while numerous off field activities were also successfully pulled off.
The programmes completed to date include the launching of the Berbice Cricket Board Annual Magazine, Educational Awards Scheme, Unveiling of All Time Under-15 Team, Annual Awards Scheme, Inter County Cap Project, Tribute to Retired Cricketers Programme, Junior Elite Training Programme, Mother and Father of the Year Awards, honouring Coach Michael Hyles as a Berbice Cricketing Hero, Under-15 and Under-19 MVP Programmes, BCB Charity Programme and presentation of balls and stumps to cricket clubs in Berbice.
The Board was also able to successfully organise the following tournaments; Millie Lewis Female, Tenelec Inc. Under-15, Spready’s Bakery Under-19, Ricks & Sari Agro Industries Under-13, NBS Second Division and NCN Inter Zone Under-15 while the Diamond Fire & General Insurance Under-19 Inter Zone is at the final stage.
The PRO announced that the County was able to retain the Guyana Cricket Board Inter County Under-15 and 19 One Day titles while 10 Berbicians represented Guyana at the senior level. Four are currently on the National Under-15 team in Trinidad & Tobago and a further 7 have been selected to the National Under-19 team.
Three Berbicians – Tremayne Smartt, Shemaine Campbelle and Subrina Munroe toured India with the West Indies Female Team while Devendra Bishoo became the 15th Berbician to play Test Cricket.
Coaching Coordinator Julian Moore also disclosed that the BCB also organised Elite Training Programmes for their Under-13 and 15 players which lasted a period of three weeks each while a batting clinic was held for the Under-17s and fast bowling clinic for Under-19 players.
Board Treasurer Anil Beharry gave a comprehensive report of the Board’s financial state for the period February 5 to May 4, 2011 which he described as healthy. Beharry urged all stakeholders of Berbice Cricket to visit the Board’s office to review the financial statements.
Among the upcoming programmes the Board will undertake for the remainder of the year are the 3rd Annual Cricket Academy, Tribute to Heroes, Education Quiz Competition, Berbice Essay Competition, 4th Annual Review Magazine, Devendra Bishoo Trust Fund, Senior Players’ Charity Programme, Scotia Bank Kiddies Cricket, Digicel Grassroots Programme, Spin Bowlers Clinic, Wicket Keeping Clinic, Junior Captaincy Seminar and Donations to Clubs and Non Governmental Organisations.
The Finals of the Banks Light Beer 3-Day and Diamond Fire & General Insurance Under-19 Inter Zone tournaments would be played shortly while upcoming tournaments for 2011 includes the Ramcharitar Construction Services First Division 40 overs, Tenelec Inc. 50 overs, Spready’s Under-19, Tenelec Inc. Under-15 Inter Club, Republic Bank Under-17 Inter Zone, Poonai’s Pharmacy Under-13 Inter Zone, Peter Lewis Under-21 and Memorex Under-17.
BCB President Keith Foster described the Board as a closely knitted organisation with everyone fully committed to the development of the game. He called on his Executive, cricketers, club officials and the cricketing public to work harder so that the second half of 2011 would be even more successful than the first.
He also expressed gratitude to the numerous sponsors of the Board, the Media and the general public for their cooperation and assistance. The President also committed his Board to upholding its high standards in the future and to always put cricket first.
