A Corentyne man was killed on the Fyrish Public Road, in a suspected hit-and-run, just before midnight on Wednesday, after he had left a wake house not far away.
And a few hours later his relatives were pleading with the driver to come forward and assist with the funeral expenses, since they are very poor.
Dead is Jairam Sheoprashad called Rajendra Looknauth and ‘Buckie’ of 44 Topo Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to information, the man, who is separated from his wife, is an alcoholic, and would do various odd-jobs in and around the villages. The former cane cutter was the father of nine, between the ages of 20 and eight.
It is understood that Sheoprashad was struck by a vehicle and left to die. Residents in the area stated that they heard a loud impact and upon looking outside they saw a man lying on the road, his body badly disfigured. The vehicle which struck him was nowhere in sight.
According to the victim’s wife, although they were separated he would visit the home from time to time. The woman, Hema Devi Looknauth, stated that she was at home at around 05:00 hrs yesterday when she received information from her aunt that her husband was involved in an accident and was at the Port Mourant Hospital.
The woman said that she immediately went to the hospital, but did not see him there. She then went to the Ramoo Funeral Home at Rose Hall Town where she saw the body. The dead man had injuries to the head, abdomen and other parts of his body.
Hema Devi Looknauth, a mother of 15, said that she then went to the scene where she retrieved what appeared to be a piece of the suspected hit-and-run vehicle’s number plate, with the letters GG. The portion of the number plate was subsequently lodged at the Albion Police Station.
The police are investigating.
