Dear Editor,
“Brazil’s transport minister quits in corruption scandal.” This headline, on BBC News online edition, caught my attention. The opening paragraphs were equally interesting:
“Brazil’s transport minister has resigned over a corruption scandal in his ministry.”
“Alfredo Nascimento stepped down after a magazine alleged staff at his ministry were skimming off money from federal infrastructure contracts.”
While reading this article, I asked myself the question, “When will this ever happen in Guyana?”
I conclude that public officials in Guyana are either heaven’s angels, or the reporters et al who allege amid convincing evidence are demons from Hell.
In Guyana, officials get personal, defensive and vindictive in the face of allegations of graft. They desperately seek to hold on tenaciously to that which they will soon be taken from them, and given to another more worthy (hopefully): “High Office”
I am confident that one day soon, a Guyana Daily will carry a similar headline.
