Persons suffering from neuropsychiatric illness will soon be able to get their first level of treatment at the hospitals in their respective areas as efforts are ongoing to provide this service at hospitals around the country.
Already the Ministry of Health has begun training for its first ever formal Psychiatric Practitioner’s Programme.
According to Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, the first batch will be placed at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), while the future batches will be sent to the other regional hospitals.
Currently outpatient treatment and care is only available at the GPHC where patients are allowed to stay for a minimum of three days or a maximum of two weeks.
After evaluation, it is determined whether the person can go back and remain for outpatient treatment or be sent to the National Psychiatric Hospital.
“Now what we are trying to do is offer some level of mental health care at all our hospitals, so that would ease the overwhelming response at the public hospital.”
In addition, the Minister announced that Cabinet has approved the appointment of 21 Patient Care Assistants.
These students were in training over the past nine months.
Ramsammy explained that the students received specialized training in the area of care for patients with neuropsychiatric illnesses.
“The unique thing about this training is that the students were trained to deal with persons suffering from mental illnesses so that they can understand the patients and relate to their needs.”
The Minister further stated that these Patient Care Assistants will be sent to boost the services at the National Psychiatric Hospital.
These efforts are all part of the Ministry’s drive to offer better mental health care to those who need it.
On Wednesday, last, the Minister inked a $113M project which will see the construction of a state-of-the-art Acute Care Psychiatric Hospital.
This building will be constructed in the compound of the National Psychiatric Hospital.
The facility will cater for some 200 patients and is expected to be completed within another ten months.
