After facing eight counts of obtaining money by false pretence, Fazil Ramzan of Umana Developments had those charges dismissed yesterday.
The 61-year-old businessman had applied to the High Court for pre-trial liberty and was granted bail in the sum of $125,000.
Less than two months after being charged with the offence, Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry dismissed the case after police did not provide sufficient evidence.
Ramzan was represented by Attorney-at-law Sase Gunraj.
The case fell through after police failed to produce statements along with other evidence to substantiate the charges. They claimed that they were still conducting investigations.
Officials reveal that although Ramzan was facing eight charges, there were no statements submitted from the police, even after the matter was called on at least six occasions.
However, police attempted to file three additional charges yesterday, but they were not instituted since a specific rank was not available to swear to the information.
All the charges brought against the businessman came out of an agreement in which he was supposed to build and make available homes for the complainants, at Sara Johanna, East Bank Demerara. He was expected to have these homes available within a six-month period.
The individuals had claimed that Ramzan received payments from local and overseas–based Guyanese towards various housing projects, and had not fulfilled his obligation.
