Anthony Augustin has been given a golden opportunity to redeem himself in the eyes of his supporters when he faces off with St Lucian, Joseph Christopher in the latest edition of the ProAm boxing extravaganza at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Friday July 29.
The stocky heavyweight has had torrid times in earlier editions of the programme and has surrendered lopsided decisions to Kurt Bess and Mitchell Rogers. He has taken his losses in stride and remained in gym biding his time. While not much is known of his opponent, Augustin is keen to intensify his training sessions in anticipation of whatever Christopher has to offer.
Miguel Antoine has benefitted from the ProAm cards after defeating Shawn Pyle in December last year then following up with a lopsided victory over Mark Austin last February. The Bajan will now attempt to get past Cassius Matthews in a junior welterweight affair. Matthews was away from the sport for more than four years when he signed to fight Simeon Hardy in March this year. He suffered a humiliating loss on points but rebounded to defeat Shawn Pyle unanimously one month later. Ever since then Matthews has been training diligently in Linden and would obviously enter the bout with every intention to avenge the losses suffered by his countrymen.
Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers will once again be in action when he opposes St Lucian, Selwyn Lett in a bantamweight shindig. This bout will also be the decider for Rogers who, despite his crowd pleasing style, has lost his last two bouts. This time around he should enjoy support from the home crowd which might just be the remedy for rekindling his career.
Joel McRae was dominant against ‘Dangerous’ Denny Dalton but will find a different opponent in Edmond DeClou in their middleweight bout. The latter fighter has deceptive power and is also an astute boxer. He has been in many wars and came out on top. His most recent bout against Winston Pompey, which he won, could be used as an indicator for what could transpire in the impending bout.
However, McRae has enjoyed international exposure in Trinidad and Tobago where he has been pounding it out with top boxers the likes of Kurt Sinette among others. Should the southpaw McRae enter the ring with the same form as when he opposed Dalton then fans could expect an all out war.
Meanwhile, the boxers are scheduled to convene at the Avenue of the Republic offices of Abdool and Abdool’s Insurance Brokers to sign their respective contracts this afternoon. They would then intensify training activities at gyms in the city and its environs.
