BROOKLYN, New York (CMC) — Defending champions Jamaica maintained their winning ways on Sunday by crushing Barbados 5-1 in the eighth round of the Digicel New York Caribbean Cup here.
In the earlier matches in Sunday’s triple header, Guyana, with the addition of seven national players, swamped St Kitts and Nevis 6-0, while Grenada beat Dominica 3-0.
National striker Devon Millington scored a hat-trick for Guyana, and his national colleagues Alvor Nardir and Deshared Thom registered one each. Kevin Beaton scored Guyana’s other goal.
For Grenada, striker Joel Forde converted twice, and Marcus Julien once.
The six-time champions Jamaica completely dominated the one-sided affair before a vociferous crowd at the Jefferson High School stadium, as Roland Dean struck a brace and Romario Campbell, Garfield Gillespie and Richard Edwards all added goals.
Barbados, without the services of some of their national players who chose to remain at home this season, were clearly no match for the rampaging New York Reggae Boyz, who recorded all their goals in the first half.
Their consolation goal came off the boot of Charles Critchlow three minutes before the half-time interval.
The Jamaicans signalled their intentions in the opening seconds after kick-off when Campbell nudged past Barbadian goalkeeper captain Andre Wilkinson. Dean then eluded Wilkinson in the 10th minute, capitalising on a right-sided corner before Gillespie added a third in the 20th minute.
Jamaica demonstrated their sheer superiority five minutes later when Dean struck again and Edwards then put the match beyond the Barbadians’ grasp in the 35th minute from the penalty spot.
Convinced they had the match in the bag, the Jamaicans relaxed the tempo in the second half, making several substitutions.
The win was their second of the campaign after getting full points from Colombia’s no-show on June 19. In their first match of the season, they drew nil-all with Haiti.
“Five-one is a good margin of winning,” Jamaica coach Arthur ‘Jetty’ Mikes told CMC Sports interview. “The competition wasn’t all that stiff so we played it easy in the second half. We played some entertaining football.”
His Barbadian counterpart Alvin Brathwaite acknowledged his team was clearly no match for the Jamaicans. “Jamaica played much better,” he said while expressing disappointment that his players were not more competitive. “Ten of our players did not come up (from Barbados), but the guys could have put up a better effort,” he added.
This Sunday’s round of matches feature Haiti battling Colombia, and Antigua and Barbuda challenging last season’s runners up St Lucia.
