As part of their ongoing efforts to better man Guyana’s porous borders the Guyana Defence Force will soon be commissioning its first ever floating outpost.
On Monday evening, the outpost which is being constructed by Courtney Benn Contracting Services Limited (CBCSL) was launched.
Work on the structure began last October. Chief Executive Officer of CBCSL, Courtney Benn, said that the company imported the necessary steel from the Everglades in Florida.
The outpost has a draft of 30 inches and will be equipped with sleeping quarters, a galley and storm doors for added security. There will also be a clear view at the front.
Initially, the outpost would have to be towed by a barge, because the authorities have not requested that it be fitted with engines to make it self-propelled.
The outpost, which will be finished next month, now joins Baramani and Sandaka as vessels constructed by CBCSL.
And even as the outpost was launched into the Demerara, the company was preparing to construct a pontoon for the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority.
This publication was told that the vessel will be stationed at a location from which ranks from the Army’s Coast Guard unit will operate using support vessels.
