GCC first division men had to come from behind in a surprising start to their Farfan & Mendes first division match against the under-21 on Monday, at the Bourda ground. With the under-21 side competing in their debut first division tournament and determined to make their own mark, perennial top dogs GCC were caught in a bigger fight than they anticipated.
After a scoreless first half, it was the under-21 who first scored against the odds when striker Mark Sergeant got onto the end of a pass into the circle for the tap in seven minutes into the second half.
The under-21 side came alive with excitement and played with renewed enthusiasm, but this was short-lived as GCC stepped up their game and used their superior skill and experience to take control of the remaining time.
National midfielder Orland Semple was relentless in the final 20 minutes for GCC as he opened his team’s account with a penalty corner layoff shot in the 50th minute followed by two individual field goals over the next seventeen minutes to complete his hat-trick. The 3-1 victory pushes GCC back to the top of the pool tied with Old Fort on 6 points each.
In John Fernandes Insurance Services Ltd second division action earlier the same day, the Carib All stars secured themselves solidly as tournament favourites by demolishing Old Fort 7-1.
All stars opened their account just three minutes into the match when the in-form Azad DeAbreu received a pass in the scoring circle and produced a clinical finish.
Alan Fernandes led all scorers with a double for the All stars, while teammates Dexter Wyles, Rene Edwards, Brian Asregado and James Mentore each scored one.
Old Fort’s lone goal came off the stick of newcomer Terrence Shaw. GCC and Old Fort share the spotlight in the men’s Farfan & Mendes First Division pool with 6 points each, while the All stars lead the John Fernandes Insurance Second Division pool with 10 points.
Men’s first division matches continue on Friday at Bourda with GCC taking on the Hikers and on Saturday at Thirst Park with the Airbenders taking on the Hikers and the All stars facing GCC.
