Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy yesterday confirmed that he is awaiting a report from the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital (Diamond Diagnostic & Treatment Centre), as to why an uncomplicated delivery was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), last Thursday.
It was indicated that had vital time not been lost in Bibi Khan’s delivery, the unfortunate situation in which her newborn was delivered onto the labour room floor whilst she was walking to a bed, could have been avoided.
In response to an inquiry made by this publication as to which protocol the facility breached, Dr. Ramsammy noted that a wheelchair was not provided for the then pregnant mother.
On Wednesday, last, Khan, a resident of Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was experiencing labour pains, and as a result, she visited the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital, with the intention of delivering her baby.
However, Khan claimed that instead of carrying out a thorough examination, the doctor only looked at her abdomen and determined that the then pregnant 17-year-old mother was experiencing turning pain. She was given pain killers and sent home with the assurance she was not in labour.
Hours later after the pain and contractions intensified, coupled with the passage of bodily fluids, she was rushed to GPHC.
