Dennis Daniels, who is charged with possession of narcotics, yesterday made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation brought against Daniels, states that on July 4, at Annandale on the East Bank of Demerara, he had in his possession 44 grams of cannabis and 116 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford stated that on July 4, at about 11:40 hours, ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) conducted a raid at the defendant’s home at Annandale on the East Bank of Demerara.
Telford told the court that during the raid, a search was conducted on Daniels’ person where a bottle containing a cream, rock-like substance, suspected to be cocaine, was found in his right side pants pocket. The ranks continued their search when they took the defendant upstairs and discovered another bottle containing a substance, believed to be cannabis, on his kitchen counter.
As a result, the defendant was then arrested and taken down to the CANU headquarters where the substances were tested, weighed in his presence and amounted to the aforementioned figures. He was subsequently charged with the offence.
The Prosecution objected to bail, citing the fact that no special circumstances were presented to the court.
Daniels was then remanded to prison and his matter was transferred to the Annandale Magistrate’s Court. He is expected to make his next court appearance on July 11.
