Guyana’s trawler fleet is expected to be reduced by 20 percent in 2012, says Gary Baird, Head of Legal and Inspectorate Unit stated.
Baird made that revelation on Sunday at Fisherfolk Open Day, held at Guyana Fisheries Limited Wharf, Houston.
He noted that the Fisheries Department is doing its part by working along with the Guyana Association of Trawler Owners and Seafood Processors (GATOSP) on the reduction of the trawler fleet which is being reduced by 20 percent in 2012 and seeking to implement a vessel monitoring systems for trawlers.
In addition, the implementation of such a system will improve our monitoring surveillance and control of that sub-sector.
Baird stated that the Department is also working on maximizing licensing among artisanal fisheries and is doing better this year than previous by conducting licensing exercise within the coastal regions after running advertisements on television stations.
