Following hot on the heels of the recently concluded GT&T 10/10 Softball Cricket Competition, Kares Engineering in collaboration with Bushy Park Sawmills Inc officially launched their version during an impressive ceremony which was held at the GCC ground, Bourda Sunday.
Attended by members of the organising committee headed by Kares Engineering Chief Executive Rajesh Rameshwar, GT&T’s Richard Sukhdeo, Guyana Softball League President Halim Khan and Minister of Education Shaik Baksh, participants listened as Rameshwar spoke of his Company’s involvement in the competition, while he also revealed the extent of the investment which according to him is in excess of $25million.
Rameshwar speaking on behalf of the sponsors said that they were delighted to be the host of such a massive Tapeball tournament, the biggest to be staged in the history of this country.
He said the participation of over 100 secondary schools in the competition is also a recent innovation that will see them vie for the top prize of $400,000 and lap top computers in a separate category where the winning school will be awarded the prizes to spend on a project of their choice.
The Engineering firm CEO was of the view that the tournament in addition to showcasing the skills of players will also help to talent spot and nurture raw talent that could eventually assist in the development of players ambitious, enough to want to make it to the West Indies team.
He informed that the competition’s itinerary will be published in the newspapers every Thursday.
Baksh in his remarks said that he was glad to be associated with the event, adding that the mere inclusion of over 100 secondary schools is enough to warrant his periodical visits to playing venues to witness some of the matches.
He viewed the schools involvement as a development that could help inculcate good discipline and behaviour, two pertinent issues that are affecting the smooth delivery of education presently.
He added that the youths need an outlet and this tournament to his mind could be that source that allows them deviate from many of the unacceptable practices they engage in at school due to the lack of adequate sporting activities.
Khan, who opened the floor for remarks pointed to the professionalism the League brings in any tournament that they are associated with. He indicated that the tournament is anticipated to impact communities in a positive way, adding that it will help with social and racial cohesion.
Khan, too, urged teams to exercise discipline throughout the competition which will provide the avenue for them to display their skills. He disclosed softball cricket is catching on in many other countries, while using Cuba as one example of its development outside of Guyana.
Meanwhile, the winner of the male category will cart off $1million, runners-up $400,000, 3rd placed-$150,000 and 4th placed-$100,000.
All four teams will receive trophies.
The winners of the Ladies Division will take home $500,000 and runners-up $250,000.
Players of the match in the semi-finals and final will be awarded a scooter each, while Zone winners will collect $10,000 and a trophy.
Over 938 teams have registered so far.
