On a beautiful CARICOM holiday with grey skies with shades of the sun showing itself from time to time, the cream of Guyana’s cyclists were matching pedals against each other in search of glory in the 8th Annual Wheat Up 65-mile cycle road race sponsored by the National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO).
When proceedings came to an end in the most anticipated category {senior}, the sprint-king of Guyana, Roraima Bikers Club Alonzo Greaves was ecstatic as raised his hands in triumph, out-powering fierce rival the inform Robin Persaud, Eric Sankar and the ever present Walter Grant-Stuart in a four-way sprint to the line.
Junior Berbice sensation Neil Reece, who was the recipient of a new machine from long time sponsors A. Ally & Sons General Store of New Amsterdam Berbice made himself, sponsor and club proud by taking the 5th spot overall as well as the junior category.
Sean Alves took the 6th place. The sprint prizes went to Mark Lewis (4) with one apiece for Albert Philander, who suffered a puncture in the early stages of the race and did not take any further part, Warren Mc Kay, who continues to struggle for consistent form, Paul De Nobrega, Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson, Grant-Stuart and Junior Niles.
The race commenced outside NAMILCO Agricola East Bank Demerara with the seniors and juniors proceeding to Long Creek on the Linden Soesdyke Highway before returning for the finish outside the Two Brothers Gas Station at Eccles, East Bank Demerara.
Veterans, upright and females turned back at the Soesdyke Junction.
Reece in taking the junior category out sprinted Linden’s Michael Anthony and the fast rising Raul Leal.
While the senior riders from the city are very dominant over their colleagues from other parts, it is not so with the junior and female divisions.
National Road Race champion, Linden’s Hazina Barrett maintained her domination on the distaff side with another comfortable win over her competition in Berbice’ Marica Dick and Naiomi Singh. Jude Bentley achieved back to back wins with victory in the upright category following up on his win the day before on the West Demerara. Richard Charles and Kester Croal trailed Bentley to the line similarly to the day before also.
The veteran segment of the race went to Talim Shaw who outmaneuvered Shameer Baksh and Andrew Phang in that order.
Delivering remarks prior to the presentation ceremony were Director of Sport Neil Kumar, Roraima Bikers Club (Organiser) President Brian Allen and Financial Director of NAMILCO, Ato Lakeram who congratulated all the competitors which numbered 61. Lakeram complimented the host club for another fine job in bringing off the event while singling out former President George Humphrey under whose tenure the company began sponsoring the race which has grown over the past eight years.
“I would like to let you know that we at NAMILCO are committed to continuing the partnership with the club and sponsorship of the event.”
Apart from cash incentives and trophies to the top place riders, the category champions were presented with ‘Wheat Up’ Champion jerseys.
