Jason Koylass, the distinction student of Mrs. Rosemarie Henry, who was showered with trophies, is the first person in four years to have achieved the William Pilgrim Trophy for music. The trophy rewards the individual who has the highest distinction mark in the Caribbean.
It was also brought to the public’s attention that the William Pilgrim Trophy was last secured by his older brother, Nicholas, in 2007. Since then no one was eligible to gain the award.
The occasion was the annual ‘Musicians on Stage’ concert and award ceremony held by Guyana Music Teachers’ Association at the National Cultural Centre.
Among the performances were dances by the National School of Dance, a composition by the Guyana Police Force Band, piano solos, violin solos, poetry and songs. Vice President of the association Mrs. Rosemarie Henry told Kaieteur News that she is extremely proud of the students’ performance and stated that the organization has big plans for its future.
The presentations of trophies and awards to the respective students were done by Dr. Joycelynne Loncke. Most outstanding amid the awardees was young Jason Koylass. He attained the Orin Barrow Trophy for Grade Four, Music Teachers’ Junior Prize and the William Pilgrim Trophy for the highest distinction mark overall.
Koylass, who became fond of music from age five, told Kaieteur News, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mrs. Rosemarie Henry and my relatives who have been very enduring and supportive of me in my venture towards my success in gaining these trophies.” The programme commenced at 03:00 hours and it spanned more than two hours. The concert was brought to an end with a vote of thanks by a GTMA committee member. This was followed by the finale by the Guyana Police Force Band.
