Mackeson Senior League kicks off this weekend
The 2011 season of the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA) was opened on Sunday last with a game between Upper and Lower East Coast teams, the former winning the match-up 2-1 at the BV Ground following a simple opening ceremony and March Past of six of the eight affiliated teams.
Ansa McAl Trading Public Relations Officer Darshanie Yussuf did the traditional kick off of the ball to signal the start of the season which will feature eight (8) teams vying for the championship and bragging rights in the competition that will be played over two-rounds. The winner of the league, second, third and fourth placed teams will receive cash prizes varying from $250,000, $175,000, $100,000 and $70,000 along with trophies. Guyana Football Federation Vice President Franklin Wilson delivered feature remarks and challenged the players to lift the level of their game in order to be competitive at the Association level. He reminded the players, many of whom are young, that the East Demerara Football Association at one time was a force to reckon with and they need to take on the mantle of return in association to those glory days.
EDFA President Aubrey Hutson in his remarks thanked the teams for being a part of the EDFA. He thanked the sponsor for their support and partnership with the Association for the third consecutive year.
“We do hope that we as an association can give you value for your sponsorship. I would like to implore upon you the clubs to take this year’s league to another level, play fair, adhere to the rules and let discipline be your watch word. You Coaches also have a very vital role to play in molding and producing players of high quality.”
Ms. Yusuf reminded the gathering that Ansa McAl through its brand, Mackeson is committed to the holistic development of the game in the EDFA whilst whishing all the teams the best.
