About 15:00 hrs on Monday, a speeding white Toyota 212 motor car PKK 6296 which was heading towards New Amsterdam slammed into a still unidentified teenage pedal cyclist, before plunging into a trench. According to eyewitness reports the speeding car was coming off the Canje Bridge and was in the vicinity of the New Amsterdam Technical Institute when the 22-year-old driver, in trying to over take another vehicle lost control and ended up on the opposite side of the road.
The out of control car then hit the pedal cyclist who was heading in the opposite direction. The accident occurred in front of the Fort Canje Hospital and the car ended up in the trench outside the hospital.
The cyclist who appeared to be no more than 15 years old was picked up in an unconscious condition, bleeding profusely and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital with injuries to his head and other parts of his body.
He was immediately transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he remained in an unconsciousness state.
The driver, it is understood, when tested, had a blood alcohol level way above the prescribe limit.
