A resilient knock of 49 (4×4) by Azeeze Amir piloted Diamond Sports Club to a 31 runs victory over North Soesdyke Cricket Club (NSCC) when those teams clashed in the Neville Sarjoo 40 overs cricket competition hosted by the East Bank Cricket Association at the Demerara Cricket Club ground yesterday afternoon.
The eventual winners called correctly and elected to bat in hazy conditions and Imran Hussain and Amir Azeeze patiently compiled 24 and 16 runs respectively in 12.2 overs when rain interrupted play for about 90 minutes. Upon resumption, the umpires shaved off 8 overs from the initial 40 and Hussain added a further 8 runs to his total before he was caught by Dennis Mangru off the bowling of Jermaine Griffith. He lashed two fours and a lofty six in his top score.
Terrence Sukhu was next to go but not before benefiting from tardy fielding by Otis George who let a simple catch slip through his fingers. Luckily, the miss did not cost much as Sukhu went two balls later, caught on the boundary line by Owen Grannum.
It should have been 92-3 when Shiv Persaud lashed the ball and raced to the other end only to discover that his partner had not responded. Luckily, the fielder returned the ball to the wrong end allowing Persaud to race back to his crease.
Shiv Persaud, on the other end then took over the strike and hit two lofty sixes on his way to 24 runs before he holed out to Hardeo Seeram going for another six. Ramotar Bissoon strolled in with the score on 141-6 and 5 runs later was back in the pavilion, LBW to Dennis Mangru for 8.
The North Soesdyke bowlers then wrapped up the innings with the opposition adding another 19 runs when their overs ran out, setting the North Soesdyke team 161 for victory.
When NSCC batted, Otis George took charge early in innings and eventually lashed a top score of 33 (2×4, 4×1) before he was dismissed. Wickets then fell in quick succession starting with Daniel Sarjoo (0), Hardeo Seeram (7), Owen Grannum (6) and North Soesdyke were in trouble at 78-4 in the 21st over.
It was then 80-5 when Dennis Mangru struck the ball and attempted an impossible single only to find himself short of the crease when the return came in. R. Gangaram also struck the ball and aimlessly raced down the pitch. He was barely halfway to the other end when the opposition’s keeper collected the return and removed the bails (80-6 in the 25th over).
Ronald Jaisingh and Terry Liverpool then tried to repair the innings but with the score on 118-8 and still 43 runs to be had, the task was highly improbable if not impossible.
Both batsmen struck one six apiece and rekindled the hopes of their teammates. In the end it was merely an anticlimax as Jaisingh first went, bowled by Debydial Amarnauth before Liverpool fell, bowled by D. Jones for 19.
The Diamond Sports Club bowlers wasted little time in cleaning up the tail and the final score for the eventual losers was 119 all out. Jermaine Griffith, Rakesh Gangaram and D. Mangru took 2 wickets apiece for the winners with Gangaram taking the honours after conceding 17 runs. Mangru and Griffith conceded 24 and 38 runs respectively. Amarnauth Debidyal took 3-22 and eventually copped the man-of-the-match prize.
