The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has acknowledged that certain protocols were breached in relation to a baby falling unto the labour room floor after being delivered by its mother.
On Thursday, a 17-year-old mother, Bibi Khan, was made to talk to a bed in the labour room despite experiencing agonizing pain while the baby was crowning. Before she could have made it to the bed her baby fell out onto the floor.
Khan told this publication that the nurses are blaming her for the mishap, claiming that she should not have pushed the baby out.
But the GPHC in a statement said that it will not deny that certain protocols were not followed as such the responsible staff will be appropriately sanctioned.
It was noted that management of GPHC was informed of the issue and immediately launched an investigation which revealed that certain protocols were breached by the relevant staff.
This, the hospital said, resulted in the unfortunate incident which occurred on the morning of June 30.
GPHC acknowledges and agrees with the comments issued by the Health Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy regarding the normalness of such occurrences.
“There was a doctor on duty in the Labour Room at the time of the incident, the mother and baby were attended to immediately and appropriate tests were subsequently run to ensure their safety. Results from an ultra sound and other tests proved that both were safe,” GPHC stated.
The facility noted that it regrets this incident which occurred and assures the general public that all measures are being taken to ensure that it never reoccurs.
