Dear Editor,
Little by little we see our country adapting other styles and practices that have proved successful in other parts of the world.
I think that the recent announcement by the Education Ministry that all schools will have duly elected Students’ Councils is a good move and parents should encourage their children to embrace this development in the school system.
Schools in other parts of the world have instituted Students’ Councils which have been working to the betterment of the schools because they help students to share ideas, interests and concerns with teachers and Heads.
This way, I think, students will be able to help to bring to the attention of the teachers, issues that affect them daily and it will provide a way for teachers to gauge how their techniques work and what the more pressing needs are.
In other countries that have functioning Students’ Councils, the students themselves also help to raise funds for school-wide activities, including social events, community projects and school reform. Through this medium, many members learn skills that were an extension of their formal education.
Some of the countries with functioning Students Councils include Barbados, St. Kitts, United States of America, Canada, Finland, Ireland, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Bulgaria and India.
An example of the structure of a Student Council may include a President, a Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. These roles may be assigned or voted on, either within the Student Council or by the entire student body.
They may also reflect descending grade-levels, with the President in the oldest grade, and so forth. Often a Student Council is overseen by a sponsor, which is usually a teacher at that particular school and most Student Councils have a constitution of some sort.
This is something which I am sure will prove good for our education system and give students some control over their learning environment since they would be able to represent themselves and make recommendations for positive changes.
