The Guyana Softball League held a successful one day female cricket tournament last Sunday at Helena Mahaica in which Enterprise Stars of Enterprise and Rising Stars XI of West Coast Demerara dominated proceedings on a fun filled day as the vocal spectators urged the teams on.
The day started with an introduction to the teams participating to all the visitors. The games began with Rising Stars taking on Enterprise Stars, which was won by the latter by some 5 wickets with skipper of Enterprise, Kavita Yadram hammering 35 not out (1×6; 2×4) out of a total of 79 -6 in 9.3 overs of their maximum ten overs. In Rising star innings Taslema Bacchus scored 15 and Natoya Elexy 12 out of a total of 78 all out in 9.1 overs.
The second match saw Rising Star XI beating Mahaica Queens by some 33 runs as Natoya Elexy slammed 27 before she was run out in the 5th over trying to turn a single into two runs. The skipper Waheeda Rahaman then came in and continued to hit the ball all round the ground gathering 25 before she went caught on the long off boundary going for an almighty hit. The innings ended on 91-3 in their ten overs. Mahaica Queens were dismissed for 58 in 7 overs with Rajshree Rajwa taking 3-5 runs from 2 overs.
The next match saw Enterprise cruising to victory by some 30 runs versus Mahaica Princesses with the star of the batting for Enterprise again being Kavita Yadram scoring a brisk 37 before being run out by a direct hit. The Enterprise Stars made 87-6 in their innings and limited Mahaica Princesses to 67 all out in 9.5 overs, Kavita Yadram putting a good performance in the field by taking four catches.
The next match saw Rising Star mauling Mahaica Princesses by some 52 runs. Ring stars XI made 98 with Taslema Bacchus clobbering 38 not out. Mahaica Princesses were bundled out for 46 runs in 9 overs with Natoya Elexy taking 2-8 in 2 overs and Sunita Bissoon 2-6 and Debbie Kuppan 2-13.
Mahaica Queens, who were good in the field all day, made light work of Mahaica Princesses by defeating them by 8 runs in a thrilling encounter.
Mahaica Queens also performed credibly against Enterprise Stars losing by just 2 runs after Mandy Mangroo put them on the verge by making 14 in a partnership of 33 with Michelle LaFleur who scored 21.
Enterprise Stars were declared the winners of the tournament and received their trophy and Rising Stars XI the runner up after a lackluster performance in their first match and picking up their game as the day progressed.
The Guyana Softball League will now turn their attention to the other zones as they strive to bring more to the areas. East Bank is the next area they will be taking the one day tournament.
Meanwhile, Success committee will be holding a two day 10 overs competition with the blessings of the league and are requesting teams make contact with Rafman Ali on tel Nos 654 -2233 for more details. The competition is being held to raise funds for the development of the ground.
