– Carlos Adams completes treble
In a battle of attrition where both players felt the pressure of the main event, Aruna Ramrattan claimed her first Ladies title when she defeated doubles partner Shawna Gentle 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in a highly entertaining final that lasted for three hours as play in this year’s GBTI Open Tennis Championships continued, at the entity’s Hardcourts in Bel Air.
The match started off evenly as Gentle and Ramrattan who are familiar with each other’s game stayed on course until the ninth game when Gentle secured the break, before serving out to take the opening set.
The second set followed a similar trend as both players opted to play safe tennis and wear each other down, while there were the occasional moments of brilliance when the usually big hitting pair decided to go for winners.
Ramrattan, however, clawed her way back in the game and levelled the contest by taking the second stanza to set up a decider.
The third set saw the players fighting for the coveted title and they entertained the fans with some lengthy rallies and all knew the encounter was going to go right down to the wire with the title up for grabs.
Despite having problems holding her serve, Ramrattan was able to secure the break on Gentle’s serve to keep the match even until 6-6 and then force the tie-breaker.
The tie-breaker was entertaining as several long quality rallies indicated that both players wanted the win badly and in the end it was 16 years old Ramrattan, who was able to edge out the win.
Meanwhile, veteran Carlos Adams returning after a lengthy layoff showed his class with a determined comeback to affix the Men’s 35 Singles title to the Men’s 45 Singles and Doubles titles that he had won earlier.
Adams toppled top seed Andre Lopes in three sets to emphatically stamp his authority on the local scene with an impressive 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph over the favourite Lopes.
Lopes started off on a roll and quickly wrapped up the first set 6-0, before Adams rebounded to take the second set.
Executing some excellent passing shots, Adams broke Lopes and held the service advantage to register a well deserved victory and claim his third title.
