FastBall Football to be launched in style; $6 million up for grabs
The Bauxite Mining Town of Linden has the knack for historical moments apart from creating and unfolding events that turn out to be monumental achievements eventually. Readily coming to mind would be Mashramani and Kashif and Shanghai Football; another such event will be added to the list come this evening at the Mecca of Sports in the Town, the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground.
Another innovative form of football, the world’s greatest sport; GT&T FastBall Football will be officially unveiled to Guyana following what is anticipated to be a colorful march-past by all the competing teams in Linden, number some 34.
Honorable Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, GT&T CEO Yog Mahadeo whose brainchild (FastBall) it was, Regional Chairman Mortimer Mingo, Guyana Football Federation President Colin Klass will all deliver remarks.
The National Anthem will be sung by Linden’s own Malika Boyd who won the GT&T Cellink Jingle and Song competition.
The hype and excitement in the Linden ahead of today’s launch was electric last evening when GT&T held a pre FastBall promotion at the Amelia’s Ward Bus Park with members of the public cashing in on promotional giveaways.
Many of the persons present said they were eagerly awaiting the launch of the knock-out competition which has attracted over 200 teams, by far the largest amount of teams for any football tournament in Guyana.
Teams (male & female) will be battling to make it to the round of 32 which will showcase the best of the crop from all the regions.
Six million dollars in cash and other prizes will be up for grabs in this inaugural competition which is anticipated to be an annual affair.
Games will be played for 30 minutes (15 each half) with teams registering 15 players but only 13 being allowed to play during the game; running changes are allowed while there will be no offside in the games.
A Blue Ball will be introduced in the 12th minute of each half with 2 goals being awarded once it scores.
In an effort to get players and fans familiar with the competition rules, Awareness games were played throughout the country; Berbice, East Coast, East Bank, West Demerara, Bartica, Essequibo, Linden and Georgetown.
Opening games today will see Eagles United facing Coomacka United, Topp XX oppose Kwakwani, Amelia’s Ward A play Ituni Peacemakers and Netrockers A tangle Mahdia Gold Getters.
Fans will not be left out from the action as GT&T will be showering patrons with One Million Dollars in promotional items and giveaways.
A number of innovative games will be played during intervals where fans (male and female) will be allowed to participate to cash in on the giveaways.
Proceedings are expected to get underway at 17:00hrs with the opening ceremony followed by the games and then a big after football show featuring Jamaican artiste Konshens along with Guyanese sensation Jory among others.
