The government, in collaboration with the Civil Defense Commission (CDC), has distributed 130 food hampers to residents of Baracara, Tacuba and Icoram, located some 60 miles up the Berbice River.
The action is in response to the areas being affected by flooding as the Berbice River swelled its banks a few weeks ago.
On Tuesday, a team of Region Six officials, including Liaison to the Office of the President, Faizal Jaffarally; Deputy- Regional Executive Officer, Imran Ally, and Extension Officer of the Ministry of Agriculture, Francis Park, travelled to the community.
According to Jaffarally, each hamper contains 28 food items and almost every family benefited from Government’s intervention. He added that during the extensive rainfall, the water level in those communities rose, thus affecting the farming in the areas.
“Many farmers complained that they lost some crops and some poultry. They made representation to the Regional Administration and we subsequently contacted the Office of the President”, he stated.
Jaffarally posited that an assessment was done after meeting with a delegation from Baracara, and verification followed. “They recommended to us 130 families. The residents were very happy to receive the hampers from us”, he added.
The residents also asked for a visit to the community by President Bharrat Jagdeo. They also expressed concerns about the cattle in the area and very shortly a team from the Ministry of Agriculture will be dispatched to the area.
Already some molasses and bran have been sent to the riverain area. Cattle looking very malnourished could be seen in Baracara.
He said that another visit to Baracara is planned next week where the Regional Chairman will look after the situation with the cattle farmers.
