– Stakeholders launch NSBF
President of Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG), Chris Bowman told several schools, teachers, officials and enthusiasts yesterday that the National Schools Basketball Festival (NSBF) is “a Championship like none other” when the event was formally launched.
“It’s a championship like none other. It will be intense play for the next ten days. YBG is pleased and deeply grateful for the support given to the championships over the years,” Bowman said as major stakeholders officially ushered in the nation-wide competition.
This year, the NSBF pushed its tentacles across Guyana with the establishment of several zones or Conferences. The top teams from those conferences will compete in Georgetown at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall for the national schools’ championship.
“This is only possible because of a partnership that exists between YBG, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) and the National Sports Commission (NSC). I encourage all players to maintain the tenets of the championships,” Bowman indicated.
Director of Sport, Neil Kumar said that the NSC is satisfied that Bowman has stretched the event across Guyana. He said that he was “happy” to see so many schools participating and wished all the teams competing well.
“Do your best because I am looking forward to the best of you going on to represent Guyana at the Inter-Guiana Games. I also want to see some of you going on to get international scholarship and represent us at the senior level,” Kumar charged yesterday.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony informed that his ministry will continue to support YBG in its endeavours. He said every school should be playing basketball in Guyana and looks forward for the addition of more schools next year.
“We will continue to give the support that is necessary to grow this tournament. We feel that every school in Guyana should be playing basketball. We are going to give out backboards to schools so that we can help make this possible,” Anthony said.
He encouraged YBG to continue to push the sport in schools and encouraged the players to show discipline and display high standards. In addition, he urged the teams to be competitive but show good sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
