With a convincing 5-0 victory over the Under-21s, Old Fort has surged ahead of all challengers in the Farfan & Mendes Men’s First Division Hockey League. In the match played at GCC Ground Bourda on Friday June 24, the experienced duo of Aderemi ‘Dove’ Simon and Ivor ‘Nancy’ Thompson took the juniors apart with a classic display of individual skill.
Simon was first on the score sheet in just the 7th minute following one of his trademark individual runs from midfield while Thompson added two more in the 9th and 15th minute to take the half time score to 3-0 in favour of Old Fort.
While the Under-21s tried desperately to regain some footing in the second half, they had no answer for Simon who drilled in two more goals in the 50th and 65th minute to secure the comfortable 5-0 Old Fort victory.
This win takes Old Fort to the top of the pool on 6 points having completed their first round of matches with GCC sitting in second position on 3.
In the John Fernandes Insurance Services Ltd Second Division competition, the GCC boys proved too much for the winless Airbenders by inflicting a 7-2 beating of the ladies. GCC would pour in 4 unanswered goals in the first half with a double from goalmouth poacher Mortimer Stewart and one each from Shaka Gill and Mark Sargeant.
The Airbenders held their nerve in the second half and pulled one back through the speedy Avonda James but Stewart, with 2 more of his own, and Leonard George provided GCC with 3 more goals to take their team’s total to 7.
James tucked in a second in the dying minutes for the Airbenders to salvage some pride in bowing out 7-2 to GCC which now sit at the top of the pool with 9 points followed by the Carib Allstars on 7 and the Hikers on 4.
Farfan & Mendes matches continue with the Under-21s going into a heavy weekend in taking on the Hikers today and GCC on Monday July 4 at Bourda.
