Dear Editor,
It is commendable that such severe action is being taken against domestic violence but what about public violence? My family’s experience in the Maternity Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital was shocking.
The treatment to the mother was disgraceful and despicable.
All Holy Scriptures say that mothers are the closest thing to God yet they are being ill-treated and abused.
Isn’t a ‘one-body bed’ simply one body’s bed? Then why are two mothers at the peak of their enlargement process being forced to sleep two on a bed? Isn’t nine months of intense pain and discomfort enough for one person to handle?
My mother was admitted on September 17 last year after she began experiencing severe pains. She told two nurses who were on duty that she was ready to deliver and that she had consulted a private doctor and was given that date.
Their reply was, “Well den y’all should pay y’all money and get the baby delivered, if is rich y’all want (to) play.”
Up until September 19 she kept pleading and begging for them to take her to the delivery room. My mother screamed in pain and cried all through the day for help.
One of the nurse’s reply was, ‘Y’all don’t worry wid she. She just want de doctor fingle she fuh she feel nice.”
A guard, upon hearing the screams, went to get the doctor who examined her and said, “Get this woman ready for operation now! It’s an emergency.” We were later told that had the doctor not come in time my mother would have died.
How heartless and inhumane can one be to make someone go through that? I am also sure that my mother is not the only victim of the tortures at G.P.H.C Maternity Ward.
I call upon Minister Ramsammy and Minister Manickchand to take serious action against these dangerous people.
