Once again the efficiency of the police radio network came into play as ranks were able to recover a stolen AT 212 Toyota Carina, minutes after the vehicle was hijacked.
The car was recovered on a desolate road near the Ogle Seawall around 23:30 hours on Wednesday, but not before the hijackers had stripped it of its exterior lights, mirrors, music system and grill.
Police had detained four men who were found near the hijacked car. However the men claimed that they were in the area preparing to go fishing. This newspaper was told that the driver of the car, Seon Roach, has not identified any of the men as the perpetrators.
Roach reportedly told the owner of the car that he was hired by a man outside the Celina Atlantic Resort to go to Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara. But although the man requested to pick up his wife in Sophia, alarm bells did not ring for Roach and he proceeded to that location.
Minutes later while turning around his car in Sophia, two other men attacked and one of them cuffed him in his face and dragged him from the vehicle.
Roach reported that the men threatened to kill him, but thankfully a vehicle was approaching and they hurriedly dumped him in the nearby bushes and drove away with the vehicle, HB 7806, which is attached to the GR Taxi Service.
Roach somehow managed to contact the service’s base which in turn contacted two police ranks on motorcycle patrol.
Information was relayed via the police radio network and this led to the recovery of the car.
“The parts they stole were very expensive. They amount to about $400,000,” the owner of the car told this newspaper.
