The Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets first division and Pepsi Under-19 teams on Friday last hosted their Teacher and Student of the Term Award Programme at the Port Mourant Secondary School.
Mr. Mahendra Algu was named Teacher of the Year while Ms. Lisa Smartt was named Student of the Year.
The ceremony which was the second of its kind is part of a Pilot Programme by the two cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club aimed at assisting to lift the performance of staff and students at the school, once successful, it would be extended to other schools in the Ancient County.
Secretary/CEO of the Club Hilbert Foster congratulated both winners and urged them to maintain the high standards which led to their success.
Foster advised Ms. Smartt that discipline and hard work was the key to success and to remember at all times that education was the most important asset a person can have. He urged Teacher of the Year Mr. Algu to always be a positive role model to his students and to work harder to achieve more success. The long serving cricket administrator pledged that the Club will continue to assist the Port Mourant Secondary School while stating that the club and its cricket teams would always promote the importance of education.
Senior Mistress of the School Ms. Gail Hooper expressed gratitude to the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club while praising its members for the outstanding work it has been doing for youths and sports development in Berbice and by extension, Guyana.
Ms. Hooper urged her fellow teachers to accept Mr. Foster’s challenge to always strive for excellence and pledged that her school would always be a role model for others to emulate.
Mr. Algu received a bicycle while Ms. Smartt accepted a collection of education materials. Ms. Hooper and another teacher, Ms. Amanda Ramdass also received special gifts from the teams as rewards for their hard work during the current term. The programme was first held last term while the next ceremony is scheduled for December 2011.
