Dear Editor,
‘Prevention is far better than cure’ and this is where I compliment the PPP/C Government in its battle against the criminal elements in the country.
While many critics are busy hurling accusations of neglect and collusion against the various stakeholders, the PPP/C has been working at the higher level.
First, one must be cognizant regarding the salient factors of crime fighting. Crime is not just about ‘choke and rob.’ It goes deeper and must be tackled from that angle. Crime as a trait (for some) and a national problem resides in the psyche of the perpetrators.
To eradicate this problem takes time, planning and cooperation. I feel very satisfied that the Government has the full picture in mind. For example, there is the presence of the buttress unit, referred to as the Community Policing Group.
This means that crime-fighting is a joint activity. So when there is a break down, the fault must not be simply a breakdown by one party.
Also, in his recent outreach, Minister Clement Rohee, along with leading police officers, has been beckoning citizens to be pro-active. This means responsibility and confidentiality, two necessary elements in any safe society.
Secondly, when one acts with responsibility and confidentiality, within a network of intelligence, it portrays great patriotism. This is what the Government has been striving for. Should this be achieved, results will be much better.
Sometimes the ‘knowledge factor’ resides right in the crime precinct and with the people nearby, but when all are ‘mummed,’ the breakdown ensues.
To date, the government has been very aggressive in seeking to establish this kind of culture. There are many training ongoing programmes, the purchase of equipment and vehicles, and a general educating of the masses.
So at this level, I cannot help but be complimentary and feel optimistic.
Finally, I bring to the fore the engaging of the external, when it comes to crime fighting here locally. The nexus stretches across the borders with South American and Regional neighbours. This has already made the borders less porous than what it used to be. Guyana is also in close cooperation with the USA when it comes to drug trafficking.
So this makes crime fighting more than a parochial issue. It goes across the world, and in engaging with the external forces, I cannot help but feel far better than in the days gone by.
My urgent plea then is that crime be properly understood. Also I ask that every Guyanese be involved in this battle. The Government seems to be doing a lot of hard work, and this will pay soon.
