After burning up the road on Sunday on the West Demerara, the nation’s cyclists will have a few hours to recover before they clash again, this time in the 8th annual National Milling Company (NAMILCO) of Guyana sponsored Wheat-Up road race on the East Bank of Demerara.
The event which is organised by the Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) starts outside the sponsors Agricola East Bank Demerara headquarters at 08:00hrs on Monday (CARICOM Day) proceeds to Long Creek on the Linden Soesdyke Highway before returning for the finish outside the Two Brothers Gas Station at Eccles, covering a distance of approximately 65 miles.
Riders competing in the veterans, mountain bikes and ladies categories will turn back at the Linden Soesdyke Highway/East Bank Public Road junction to finish at the above mentioned finish line. They will cover about 36 miles.
The presentation of prizes will take place immediately after the race in the compound at NAMILCO. Cash prizes will to the first six seniors to finish the race with the top three riders in the other categories also cashing in. Additionally, the first place winners in each category will also receive one trophy each along with a Wheat-Up Road Race Champion Jersey.
In a scintillating performance in last event, Differently Able Cyclist Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson upstaged a star studded field to win and will be aiming for a repeat in 2011.
Jackson’s winning time was 2 hours 42 minutes 40 seconds, finishing well ahead of the chasing pack.
Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, Christopher Persaud, Jude Bentley, Walter Grant-Stuart and Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams closed out the top six positions.
Kurt La Rose won the junior showdown ahead of Paul De Nobrega and Berbice’ Neil Reece while Kester Croal took the upright category followed by Rickey Kissoon and Ozia Mcually.
National Road Race female champion Hazina Barrett was unstoppable and will be aiming to successfully defend her crown. Veteran Berbician rider Turhan Harris was the veteran winner.
This year’s event is also expected to exciting and competitive.
