The murder trial of Onika King, the woman accused of killing her husband, Selwyn King, by stabbing him once to the heart is expected to continue today before Justice Roxanne George-Wiltshire.
King is accused of stabbing her husband to death on December 13, 2006 at their 1830 Unity Place, Festival City home. The woman has since pleaded not guilty to the capital offence and is being represented by Attorney-at-Law, Peter Hugh.
The State is being represented by Prosecutors Prithima Kissoon and Konyo Sandiford. The case was postponed yesterday due to the absence of a male juror.
Prosecutor Sandiford in her opening statements to the court said that at the time when the injuries were inflicted King either intended to kill her husband or to seriously harm him. She said that it’s the prosecution’s belief that King was not acting in self defence, when she allegedly killed her husband.
On Tuesday, a close friend of the couple, Hosea Jacobs, gave evidence that the relationship was abusive with Onika being the aggressor in most cases.
According to Jacobs, he was at the couple’s house on December 13, 2006, making preparations for a party they were expected to keep.
During the conversation Hosea said that he told his now dead friend something about a female police officer.
Jacobs said that Selwyn responded and made sexual comments about the same female police officer.
The court was told that Mrs. King was in the living room during the conversation. Seconds later, Jacobs said he was walking down the steps when he heard a thumping sound and Selwyn groaning.
The woman then exited the house and was standing on the top landing of the steps with a knife in her hand.
The man said that he ran upstairs to see his friend lying on the ground in a crouched position.
The court was told that it was Jacobs and others who took the man to the hospital. Selwyn died at the hospital.
His wife was arrested at the hospital and was eventually charged with his murder. A post mortem report done on the man showed that he died from shock and hemorrhage due to a stab wound to the heart.
Natasha Marshall, a neighbour of the couple, had also testified in the matter. She gave certain information about a fight the couple had on December 2, 2006.
According to the woman they were at a popular club when Selwyn saw Onika talking to a male.
Further, the court was told Onika was wearing a rather revealing top. Marshall said that a fight ensued between them and Onika’s top was destroyed.
After that the couple went home where it was alleged that another argument erupted. It is alleged that Onika grabbed a cutlass and threw it at her husband and he sustained a cut above his eyes. The matter is expected to continue today.
