Dear Editor,
Since the announcement by officials that the Demerara Harbour Bridge will be equipped with closed circuit television (CCTV) for security reasons, I was happy with this announcement. On October 5, 2010, a letter I wrote, was published in the two independent dailies calling for the authorities of the Demerara Harbour Bridge to review their decision for the ticketing system at the DHB. Almost nine months later, one traversing the bridge will see it littered with slips provided by the toll boots at the DHB. Added to that, almost everyday one could also see careless drivers overtaking on the bridge although it’s illegal.
One would expect that with the introduction of the cameras most of these lawless behaviour would be reduced significantly, but instead one sees a reduced presence of security personnel on the bridge, more reckless driving on the bridge, a nasty DHB and sometimes a disgusting traffic scene whenever the DHB is closed to vehicular traffic.
I would like to know from the authorities since the installation of the cameras, how many people have been charged for dangerous driving on the bridge if any, whether there are any cameras on the harbour bridge and why are the security personnel not on the bridge anymore?
Why not re-introduce the ticketing collecting system back at the bridge, because the last time I check that was not a hindrance to any traffic.
If you are reluctant to do that perhaps you could explore the possibilities of collecting the tickets and charging the owner of the vehicle number on the slip. That is only one way I see could help beautify our country.
