Dear Editor
In reference to (Stabroek News) Tuesday, June 28, 2011 front cover on the Barrack Street, Kingston fire victims, the Guyana Relief Council (GRC) finds your comment “Most of those offered lodging at the Guyana Relief Council Shelter have now returned to the site, as the time for their stay there has ended” inaccurate and misleading to the citizens of Guyana and more so our donors and supporters.
The following facts are pertaining to the matter and it is our sincere hope that you would give these comments the same prominence in your newspaper as you did with the exhibit of June 28, 2011.
Of the number of persons affected by this fire only 20 persons, including babies and children, opted to stay at our Shelter.
So far, 14 persons have moved on to alternative accommodation, which were checked and verified as adequate by our Welfare Officer.
There is one family of six still resident in the Shelter as the GRC. They, upon checking the rented apartment found, thought that it was uninhabitable for them, especially the children. The Council therefore, continues to accommodate and provide for this family to this moment and until they can find a more suitable place.
We would like to point out that the GRC Shelter is a temporary facility geared to assist the disaster affected, with the process of rebuilding their lives. It would therefore be an inconsiderate act on our part to request that persons leave the Shelter if they did not find suitable accommodation.
The Council is very open and transparent in its actions and we have been providing regular updates to the media on the situation as it relates to these fire victims. We, the Executive and members find it sad that you published such an inaccurate and misleading comment, where a simple telephone call or visit to our office would have provided the necessary clarification.
Finally, in recent weeks fires occurred with rapid regularity and more and more persons are accepting our offer to utilize the Shelter. At the moment a family of seven affected by the recent fire in Mc Doom, EBD are also staying in the Shelter.
