Despite the soggy conditions that prevailed at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground, the two combatants Christianburg / Wismar Secondary School and New Silver City treated a fair-sized crowd to a wonderful brand of football in the final of the Region 10 segment of the Digicel-sponsored Nationwide Schools Tournament yesterday.
In the end, Christianburg / Wismar held on to win by a narrow 2-1 margin thanks to goals off the boots of Clarence Huggins, who netted in the 43rd minute and Trenton Lashley’s 56th minute strike.
Julius Smith’s 65th minute effort had threatened Christianburg / Wismar’s 2-0 comfort deep in regulation time, but they held on to capture the trophy and a set of uniforms to be worn in their quarter-final engagement.
Postponed from last Friday due to a waterlogged outfield, the two teams started the encounter in attacking mode with Christianburg / Wismar enjoying some early chances on goal, but poor finishing negated their ambitions to take the lead.
New Silver City had a few opportunities of their own, but they too were guilty of errant shooting and the half came with no goals scored.
However, the resumption saw more purpose from both teams and eight minutes into the period, Christianburg / Wismar deservedly took the lead though fortuitously when the usually competent Darius Frank stationed between the uprights in the New Silver City goal inexplicably fumbled a tame shot that allowed the loitering Huggins to squeeze in behind the defence and easily tap the ball into the back of the nets much to the disappointment of his teammates.
Bouyed by their good fortune, Christianburg / Wismar oozed in confidence after that and stretched their ascendancy when Lashley hammered in a powerful shot from about 15 yards out.
Smith then gave his team a chance to stay in the game when he too benefitted from some luck after a shot from the right flank ricocheted off the crossbar and landed at the feet of a teammate, who made a pass, before he back heeled the ball into the nets with goalkeeper Yannick Simmons stranded on the near post.
Meanwhile, Digicel’s Purchasing & Logistics Manager Azam Alli, who made the presentation of prizes in his brief remarks following the conclusion of the match, thanked all the teams that participated in the competition, before extending congratulations to the winning team that received a trophy and medals, while the losers were presented with medals as well.
Alli said that the final was a good one which was witnessed by a Member of Parliament, representative of the Ministry of Education and teachers.
He added that judging from the support of the community and the standard of football displayed he was optimistic that come next year the tournament will be bigger and better.
Alli closed by wishing the winning team good luck for the rest of the tournament.
