A post mortem examination conducted on the remains of James Phill, 61, has shown that he died from asphyxiation due to drowning. The post mortem was done by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Phill’s car was found submerged in the Hope Canal around 06:00 hrs Sunday by residents in the area.
Phill, 61, a Transport Officer attached to the Courtney Benn Construction Company resided at Second Street Dazzell Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara.
Police in a release stated that it is suspected that Phill lost control of his vehicle which plunged into the canal. The police have not ruled out foul play or suicide, and the matter is still being investigated.
His wife, Audrey Mingo, had told Kaieteur News that she last saw her husband some time before 21:00hrs on Saturday.
According to Mingo, she fell asleep and left her husband in the bed. It is believed that Phill left his Dazzell Housing Scheme home some time around midnight on Saturday.
Mingo said that she became worried when he failed to reach home and she added that around 06:00 hrs on Sunday when she was about to make a report at the Vigilance Police Station, her niece told her that her husband’s car was found in the Hope Canal.
According to the woman, a friend of her husband had seen the car in the canal and contacted relatives.
Relatives immediately rushed to the scene and found the submerged vehicle.
Mingo said her world came crashing down when she verified that her husband was inside.
According to her, all the safety locks were down in the car and the windows were up.
Mingo said that she did not observe any marks of violence on his body. After discovering the body the family made contact with a presidential guard who lived a short distance away.
It was the presidential guard who contacted the ranks at the Cove and John Station. Relatives yesterday disclosed that Phill had recently undergone surgery for colon cancer.
But Kaieteur News was told that Phill never showed any inclination to take his own life.
