Alpha United lose final game 3-1 to Gelder de Kourou
Despite losing their final game to Suriname’s Inter Moengotapoe 1-0, top French Guiana Club side US Matoury was crowned champions of the 4th Inter Guiana’s Football Club Championships at the Dr. Edmard Lama Stadium in Remire Montjoly on Saturday evening last.
Leading Guyana Club side Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United took a hammering in their final game, going to down to French Guiana’s number two team, Gelder de Kourou 3-1 in a dismal display.
Basic mistakes again were the undoing of the Guyanese side which lacked the necessary focus and discipline required at this level of the game in order to be competitive.
The opening minutes of the showdown saw Alpha controlling and moving the ball around admirably but after the first 15 minutes, their concentration somehow went off course.
Gelder de Kourou which lost their game to champions Matoury 3-1 on Thursday after defeating Inter Moengotapoe 1-0 in their first encounter of the tournament took the lead 15 minutes on, capitalizing on some poor work at the back by Alpha.
The defence was caught napping on the rebound from a free kick, Soiso Martus pouncing on the ball to hit it past Richard Reynolds in goal for de Kourou’s opening strike, Alpha 0 Gelder de Kourou 1.
The host teams in this tournament proved to be fitter and quicker to the ball than their opponents in all the matches and this encounter was no different as they kept going at the Alpha United unit, never allowing them to dictate the flow of the game.
Good work though by Alpha in the 36th minute via the combination of Shawn Bishop, Travis Grant and Keon Sears saw the Guyana side drawing level when Sears, who had initially seemed out of touch with his required role in the right outside midfield, slotted the ball into the far corner to the delight of his team mates and the handful of spectators on hand which included Guyanese fans. Alpha 1 Geldler de Kourou 1.
As has been the norm, Alpha continued to miss easy chances, Bishop went over the bar in the 42nd minute and Sears emulated him one minute later. The first half ended without any further additions to the score and Alpha in with a chance of taking victory.
After the resumption of the second half, Leon Grumble was introduced to the proceedings for Clive Andries in the 53rd minute. Gelder however retook the lead in the 61st, Evans Rhudy it was who netted this time around.
Sears who was substituted by Alpha Sylvester in the 80th minute had another chance one minute earlier to draw his team level but felt he had the luxury of time in the box, the ball eventually being cleared for a corner.
Substitute goalkeeper Alex Murray, brother of Andrew Murray who had to miss the game because of a red card in the previous match, replaced Reynolds also with 10 minutes to go.
Four minutes later, goal number three became reality for Gelder; defender Selwyn Isaacs rather than clearing the ball in good time wasted a few seconds too much halfway in his own half, time which allowed the alert Malie Orpheo to close in on him, steal the ball and with good composure slotted the ball past Murray with no defenders in place to help. Gelder de Kourou 3 Alpha United 1.
The remaining minutes were uneventful for Alpha as the home team sealed the win and second place in the tournament behind their fellow club side US Matoury. Inter Moengotapoe needled the French Guiana champions with a well taken shot in the 80th minute.
Matoury created a ton of chances but failed to finish in a lack luster display despite enjoying better ball possession. Inter Moengotapoe finished third.
Alpha gained a point form the penalty kicks loss to Inter Moengotapoe based on the competition rules; Inter received 2 points for the win.
