– as Independence Table Tennis C/ships continue
Stalled by the insistence of Chelsea Edghill and Stephan Corlette, Adielle Rosheuvel and Denzel Hopkinson went on to eventually capture the Junior Mixed Doubles title yesterday when the Independence Table Tennis Tournament continued at the National Gymnasium.
Rosheuvel and Hopkinson staved off a strong challenge from Edghill and Corlette, who stormed back to take the second set 15-13, after dropping the opening set 11-6. Rosheuvel and her partner went on to win the third set in a marathon 20-18 and the fourth 11-7 to wrap up the game.
Leading 5-1 in the third set, Edghill and Corlette displayed some fearsome drives that caught the opposing duo off-guard. Soon, the scores were levelled 6-6 before Edghill delivered a forehand drive down the centre of the table to put her team ahead.
Corlette skilfully blocked a power-shot from Hopkinson that left the later with no chance of what would have been a sensational return to extend the lead in the third set. However, Hopkinson had consecutive ‘slams’ against the diminutive Corlette to set the records straight.
The scores were 10-10 and the two teams continued to exchange points in the set that was clearly a test of mental fortitude and will. There was agitation in the Edghill camp over the length of the set that clearly was the deciding point in the title game.
Edghill, using the reverse serve to good effect, most kept her team in the game as Corlette got the occasional block and forehand drive on return. However, Hopkinson was authoritative, especially with his forehand, which helped powered his team to the win.
In other finals, Edghill and Jamaali Homer won 2-11, 11-7, 11-6 and 11-6 against Rosheuvel and Priscilla Greaves to take the Junior Girls Doubles title while Zane Humphrey and Nigel Bryan beat Hopkinson and Sachin Panday 8-11, 11-6, 11-5 and 11-8 to take the Junior Boys Doubles title.
