Adams/Panday claim over 45 Doubles title
Fourteen year old Nicola Ramdyhan survived a marathon two-hour battle against Aretta Dey to claim the Girl’s18 and under title as play in this year’s GBTI Open Tennis Championships continued at the entity’s Hardcourts in Bel Air.
In a closely fought contest, both players displayed remarkable patience, exchanging numerous rallies that culminated with one of them committing an error to end the point.
The match ended 3-6, 6-3, 11-9 (super tie-breaker) in Ramdyhan’s favour as she took the title in the absence of the more favoured Shawna Gentle and Aruna Ramrattan who are facing off for the Ladies Singles title instead.
In other action Shelly Ramdyhan/Jeremy Miller teamed up to defeat Aruna Ramrattan/Leyland Leacock 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the Mixed Doubles finals where they will face Carol Humphrey/Godfrey Lowden, while Carlos Adams defeated Steve David Longe 6-2, 6-2.
In Men’s over 45 Doubles action, the pair of Carlos Adams and Harry Panday became the first winners at the 2011 GBTI Tennis Open when they defeated the combination of Maxie Fox / Sakae Yamada in the final 6-3, 6-3.
Adams / Panday proved to be too good a combination against the wily Fox and the hardworking Yamada and posted their victory by playing some excellent doubles tennis.
Adams is also in the Men’s 45 Singles final which is set for Monday where he will face Rudy Grant, who will be looking to avenge an earlier defeat by the same opponent in Men’s 35 Singles category.
Meanwhile, today will see semi-final action in the Men’s Singles where number two seed Ezra Sue-Ho faces overseas-based college player Anthony Downes at 18:00 hrs.
Downes took out former number one player Phillip Squires in the quarter finals and his encounter against the in-form Sue-Ho should be an interesting affair.
Top seed Jeremy Miller faces Leyland Leacock in the other semi-final tomorrow evening at the same time after they posted wins against Daniel Lopes and Gavin Lewis respectively.
The Boy’s 18 and Under final was scheduled to be played last evening where top seeds and arch rivals Gavin Lewis and Daniel Lopes faced each other for the title.
The match was anticipated to follow a showdown in the Men’s Doubles category that featured top doubles team Phillip Squires /Godfrey Lowden taking on Anthony Downes /Leyland Leacock.
Also scheduled for yesterday was the Ladies Doubles final which featured the mother and daughter pairing of Shelly / Nicola Ramdyhan versus Aruna Ramrattan / Shawna Gentle and the Men’s 35 Singles semi final action between top seed Andre Lopes against Steve David Longe.
Today matches will also see action in the Mixed Doubles final where Berbician pair Godfrey Lowden / Carol Humphrey takes on Jeremy Miller / Shelly Ramdyhan for the title. The tournament is expected to conclude on Thursday June 30 when the Men’s Singles final will be played.
