Another prison officer has been caught trying to smuggle a prohibited item into a penal institution. This time it’s a female warder at the Camp Street Prison.
Kaieteur News understands that in the morning hours on Wednesday, last, at the gate of the Camp Street prison, a female Principal Officer was caught smuggling several packets of cigarettes in a flask.
This was prompted because earlier that week reports of her smuggling marijuana into the prison surfaced which resulted in her being searched by senior prison officials.
Reports revealed that senior personnel at the facility had suspected the female officer for quite some time; however, after plotting the search she was eventually caught.
Concerns of illegal items being smuggled into the prison is not new, since it is either smuggled in through the gate, although the administration has installed an x-ray scanner, or are thrown over the prison walls, such as in the case of a firearm recently.
Several officers were caught trying to smuggle marijuana into the prison. However, another issue that was underscored was the smuggling out of food products from the prisons since many riots in the past were because of the quality of food.
Reports reveal that government currently spends some $34,000 per month to maintain a prisoner.
