The Guyana Cricket Board election is now five months overdue and this does not bode well for Guyana’s Cricket as the Executive of the GCB will continue to be subsumed in politics to the exclusion of cricket development.
Mr. Chetram Singh’s long stint as President of the GCB is coming to a highly controversial and bitter end and he will be remembered more for presiding over the messy affairs of the GCB than any of his achievements.
This would be his legacy for overstaying his welcome at the helm of the GCB. His contention that he is anxious to leave and “whoever win, win” rings hollow as he is actively campaigning for Ramsay Ali to be President and Anand Sanasie to be Secretary. What is more perplexing is that Sheik Asif Ahmad, the incumbent Treasurer and the President of the Essequibo Cricket Board, will be offered the position of Treasurer in exchange for the nine Essequibo votes he holds control over. For the past two years, Ahmad’s performance as GCB Treasurer has been calamitous and at several meetings of the Executive he has been severely critised by Chetram Singh and other members. Yet the very Chetram Singh is supporting him to remain as Treasurer in order to secure the positions of Ramsay Ali and Anand Sanasie.
The quashing of the GCB’s registration to the Friendly Society has been orchestrated to preclude further investigation by the Registrar. The Honorable Minister of Sport must intervene immediately to sort out the affairs of the GCB towards the holding of their election.
