– residents complain that it is the main access bridge for the Ocean View area
After months of complaining to authorities about the state of the main access bridge to the Ocean View section of Uitvlugt Village, West Coast Demerara, residents are of the opinion that the bridge is just another excuse for officials to “put some more money in their pockets.”
At the bridge yesterday afternoon, there were two huge logs placed at both ends of the bridge, as a means of signaling vehicle operators that this bridge is inaccessible and should not be used.
One employee of the Uitvlugt Sugar Estate told this newspaper that he has been stationed at his office for six months and since his arrival he noticed that this bridge was in a deplorable condition and closed off to any form of vehicular traffic.
The bridge which is known to locals as the “Centre Bridge” was previously under the care of the Uitvlugt Sugar Estate. However; some villagers say that the Estate no longer maintains responsibility for the bridge.
This newspaper understands that the bridge had been officially closed to traffic for seven months and continue to cause numerous residents to have to drive to the other end of the village and utilise another bridge something they find to be a sore inconvenience and very time consuming.
The shop owners at Ocean View complain bitterly that the trucks which supply their shops sometimes do not use the other bridge because of the delay it causes and more than often they do not get to replenish their shelves.
One man told Kaieteur News that almost two months ago, workmen visited the site and photographed the area and also took measurements of the bridge.
To date, no works have being carried out on the bridge and residents are of the opinion that they are being neglected by Government.
Some say that the Region Three Chairman, Julius Faerber, promised to correct the situation but they seem to be “waiting in vain.”
One woman said, “If is the bridge in front their yard, you would see how quick them will fix it, but because they not living here, them don’t give a damn.”
