Imran Ally, 31, a taxi driver of Lot 8 Reliance Abandon, East Canje, Berbice, was on Friday jailed for six months by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo on a charge of Indecent Assault.
On Friday May 28, 2010 he sexually assaulted a female passenger on Garrison Road, New Amsterdam. Ally had pleaded not guilty.
According to prosecutor Corporal Sherlock King on the day in question about 18:30 hours, the 36-year-old woman had boarded the car at Goed Bananen Land in East Canje on her way home to Winkle, New Amsterdam.
In the vicinity of the Canje Bridge the accused told her to wind up the window and he threw back the seat. He then drove the car under the Canje Bridge. He then told the woman that he would marry her and started to fondle her breast, kiss her on her neck and fondle her vagina.
The woman started to cry and to resist. She told the accused that she was married already. She threatened to jump out of the car if he did not stop. Ally then drove the car and dropped the woman home. The matter was reported and Ally was arrested and charged and eventually found guilty.
In mitigation his lawyer begged the magistrate to be lenient with his client stating that it was the first time that he was involved with the law.
The lawyer also said that his client was a married father of one and if incarcerated it will affect his family relationship.
