– Beginning of extensive support- says Babb
Giftland OfficeMax, which is an authorised distributor of FILA apparel in Guyana, has turned its attention to Guyana’s female rugby team, beginning with the three players who will form part of the West Indies’ Select 15s team in the Cayman Islands next month.
Giftland already has apparel contracts with bodybuilder, Sylvan Gardner, sprinter, Alicia Fortune and basketball player, Akeem Kanhai.
The corporate giant has now extended such support to the female rugby team in a gesture that is expected to increase over time.
“I think we are among the first people to give such recognition to female rugby. We’re giving the three players warm-up gear, practice gear, pants, shirts, rugby shoes, and even socks, which is an introduction to full sponsorship of the national female rugby team,” Marketing Executive at Giftland OfficeMax told Kaieteur Sport.
Babb handed over the items at a simple ceremony at the National Park Rugby Field on Thursday afternoon.
He said that all the apparel was handed over under the FILA brand. Babb said that his company was pleased to be associated with the success of female rugby.
Guyana’s national female captain, Sabola Grey, Nicole Nero, who was the Most Valuable Player last year on the Caribbean’s selects women’s tour, and debutant Grace Jarvis are the players who will be in the Cayman Islands next month as part of the West Indies unit.
Match Secretary at the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), John Lewis, told this newspaper that the Union is very pleased to have three players on the Caribbean side this year, which marks an increase from the two-player quota they received last year.
In addition, he said that the Union welcomes the gesture of supporting the outstanding females as Giftland moves toward full support of Guyana’s national female rugby team.
The female national rugby team is the current Caribbean Champions.
